In the case of tongs or grippers, the load is taken up by clamping forces, positive locking or by force and positive locking acting between gripping elements such as tong arms or jaws or thrust pieces. The load must be gripped reliably and inadmissible indentations by gripping elements must be avoided, which is why tongs and grippers must be adapted to the loads to be transported in the size and shape range. A distinction is made between tongs and grippers for barrels and crates.
