Automatic opening of load hooks for more safety at work

Herausforderungen beim Anheben von Filigrandecken

Fast cycle times, complex framework conditions and difficult situations are regular challenges for occupational safety on construction sites and in industry. This is even more true when handling heavy loads at great heights. Under time pressure, small careless mistakes happen quickly and can have fatal consequences: One wrong step on a filigree ceiling, for example, and a worker falls.

To prevent such accidents, there are load hooks that can be opened from the ground and partly also closed. For the so-called attaching (picking up the load) and detaching (releasing the load), the employees remain close to the operation, but are no longer in the immediate danger zone. No one has to climb a ladder, for example.

Automatic removal of loads

Even with the greatest care, a great deal of expertise and consideration of occupational safety measures, dangerous situations cannot always be avoided in everyday work on construction sites. Climbing ladders, for example, regularly leads to accidents. According to statistics from the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), over 30 % of all fall accidents occurred from ladders in 2021. Therefore, it is better if employees do not have to step into a danger zone in the first place (i.e. at heights of about 2 metres or more) and remain safely on the ground.

One approach to ensure more safety is to release the load from the ground using automatic load hooks.. Thanks to this technology, the opening of the load hooks works without even putting people in danger. Employees simply use a remote control for this.

Automatic knocking off of loads - the advantages

When you release the load hooks by remote control, you enjoy benefits on several levels.

Safety with the load hook is primarily for occupational health and safety

The most important aspect of load hooks is the protection of people. When loads are not placed directly on the ground but have to be struck off at heights, dangerous situations arise. With traditional systems, workers have to use aids (ladders, scaffolding or lifting platforms) to reach the load hooks. This poses dangers for the user.

To ensure the best possible protection, employees should not even have to enter the danger zone. Electronic automatic hooks are connected to a remote control that allows them to be struck off even from a distance. With the help of the radio remote control, the load hooks open - and only when they are not under load. Automatic hooks have additional safety mechanisms that prevent unplanned opening. The so-called minimum load cannot be bypassed.

Intelligent technologies such as automatic hooks improve occupational safety, so much so that the Building Industry Association even promises bonuses for the purchase of load hooks that make the use of ladders unnecessary when striking down heights. Anyone who buys an automatic hook with remote release can receive up to 50 % of the purchase costs (or up to 1,500 euros) from BG Bau.

Workflow: Occupational safety and productivity can be reconciled

Automatikhaken Quick Link CLEH im Einsatz

Occupational safety is often associated with losses in productivity. However, when it comes to safely lifting loads with the help of automatic hooks, it is exactly the other way round. In many situations, releasing a load hook by remote control is much faster than the manual variant. If an employee first has to bring a ladder to the load, secure the ladder, climb it, knock the load off at the top and then leave the danger area again, this sometimes takes a considerable amount of time.

But if you strike off the load by radio, you have already struck the next load before the worker would even be on a ladder. Attaching and detaching is very quick. With Elebia load hooks, the load can even be picked up remotely - for example, directly by the crane operator.

FAQ: Knocking off loads from a distance

Can I also knock down heavy loads over 10 T by remote control?

Yes. Both the Elebia and Levo Hook systems lift loads up to 25 T and 16 T respectively. Make sure you choose the correct version that is approved for the payload you need.

How do automatic hooks work?

Automatic hooks for slinging loads from a distance are operated electronically. Employees release the load hook via a remote control and do not have to enter the load's danger zone to do so. A push of a button is all that is needed to release the load. The electric motor responsible for this is powered by rechargeable batteries. These can be exchanged and recharged quickly and easily. It is not possible to open the load hook under load. Unintentional dropping can therefore not happen. If the load hook has a magnetic field, it can even be attached automatically. Otherwise, employees have to take over this work step.

For whom is the automatic opening of hooks suitable?

Whenever loads have to be suspended at heights, the use of automatic hooks is worthwhile. Especially in industry, construction and logistics, such load hooks prove to be very useful. When building roofs or scaffolding, for example, workers regularly have to put themselves in danger without using the innovative load hooks. Only those who basically strike off loads on the ground do not have to rely on this type of load hook to improve safety.

How can I safely open load hooks at height?

Automatic hooks are opened by remote control. This allows loads to be lifted without workers having to enter the area where there is a risk of falling. The remote controls communicate with the load hooks by radio and have a range of between 50 and 100 metres (depending on the product). Several load hooks can also be opened via a remote control.

Under what conditions does the automatic knocking down of loads work?

Automatic hooks also work under adverse conditions. The products can withstand temperatures between 0°C and 60°C. Some makes can even cope with minus temperatures or heat up to 85°C. The remote controls are designed so that they can be operated even when wearing gloves. The individual load hooks of the type Quick Link CLEH are also designed so slim that they can also be used in more difficult slinging situations. When the slinging point is particularly narrow, for example, Quick Link is especially helpful.
